Infinity and teal semicolon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small black infinity symbol sits across the inner wrist, with a teal semicolon overlapping its centre. The black linework is smooth and even, with tapered ends on the loops. The tattoo is centred on a plain, lightly lit wrist against a dark grey background.

The log for the Maud Ellery had been kept in ink since Gravesend, and by the fortieth day Ada Penhale had stopped trusting the captain's full stops. Captain Roper wanted every entry closed hard: wind south-west, sea moderate, all well. He said a full stop was a fence round the day. Ada preferred to leave the pen hovering, so the sentence could keep running into the next watch.

On the night the cook slipped down the forward hatch and lay three days with a broken collarbone, she wrote him into the log in pencil, the entries knotted with semicolons. Wind backing; cook abed; mate at the wheel in his stead; glass falling. Roper read it at breakfast and said nothing, which from him was a kind of permission.
Off the Horn the weather came round in a loop, the same grey squall returning three mornings running, and Ada began to draw it in the margin: a figure eight lying on its side, a line that never reached the edge of the page. Beside it, in green ink she had carried from her mother's sewing box, she set a small dot above a comma. Let the sea make of that what it likes.
When they raised the Falklands, the captain signed the log and found the margin. He tapped the green mark with one finger. "Ends on a comma, that. Still going, then." Ada blotted the page. Nothing in the book was finished yet, and she meant to keep it that way until Port Stanley.
