Thirty-one years I sold tickets at Carrick Road, and every Tuesday the same fellow came to my window asking for a single to Wetherby, never a return. He never once got on. He'd fold the ticket into his coat, walk the length of platform two, and stand under the lamps until the 4.10 pulled out without him.

One wet March he leaned on the glass with a red biro heart drawn on the back of his hand, a bit wobbly, as if the pen had been held by someone laughing. I asked him what it meant. He said his wife had drawn it at the kitchen table on the back of a gas bill, then drawn the lazy figure of eight beside it, and told him that was how long they'd keep going, the two of them, round and round like the trains on the Wetherby loop. I told him trains don't go on for ever, the rails get lifted. He said, that's why she put the heart inside the loop, so the rails would have something to hold.

He stopped coming in April. On the first Tuesday of May a letter arrived at the office, one ticket to Wetherby inside, unused, and a note in a looping hand: Keep the loop open, Walter. I put the ticket in the lost property drawer, because that's where things go when they have nowhere to be. But the next morning I walked platform two myself, and the lamps were lit though it was broad day, and at the far end the rails curled round in a long figure of eight, and a small red light sat in the middle of it, steady as a heart.
