Infinity symbol with arrow on the wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black infinity loop is crossed diagonally by an arrow, with its head pointing up and to the right and its fletching at the lower left. The linework is bold with some textured, speckled shading in the thicker strokes. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner wrist against a dark background, with the photo framed from the hand down to the forearm.

Dear Ada,

The grader came back out this morning and the foreman has finally stopped pretending the new road runs straight. I walked it with a chain and a flask of stewed tea, out past the dry well where the tarmac bends. Forty miles across the Marlow Flats and it folds back on itself like a figure eight somebody forgot to lift the pen from.
Underneath the black, the old camel track is still there, pale as bone where the rain has scoured it. Nobody laid that track. It just wore itself in, the way water finds a crack. Halfway round the loop I found a survey stake leaning in the crust, and someone had painted an arrow on its top, the head pointing up and east, the feathers trailing down to the left. The paint has faded to rust, but the point is still sharp.
I sat on that stake for a long time. The foreman wants me to sign off the bend as a fault in the plans. I told him the plans were drawn by a man who had never been thirsty out here. He laughed, then stopped.
I'm not signing. Tomorrow at first light I'm going to drive the loop once more, following the old track instead of the lines, and I'll leave the engine running at the arrow just to see how far the road will carry me before it bends back. Keep the kettle on. I'll write from wherever the tarmac ends.
Love, Mae
