A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ladder my father left me had a loose rung near the top, so I learned to hold the trunk with one knee and keep the basket riding on my hip. It was August at Pell's orchard, and the grass under the Cox trees was furred with windfalls going sweet while the wasps grew drunk on them. Mr Pell paid by the crate and stamped each one from a tin of ink he kept in his waistcoat pocket: a small black heart for the early pickings, a plain circle for the bruised fruit he sold to the cider men.

On the south slope stood two trees that had once been one. Pell had grafted them the spring I was born, cutting a sliver from a Discovery stock and binding it to a Bramley with waxed twine until the wood knit. The join crossed itself like a figure eight lying on its side, and the bark had swollen into a ridge you could follow with a thumb. When I asked why he had never cut them apart, he said, "That's a union that takes. Separate them now and you kill both."

I was seventeen and had been courting Lise Harrow behind the packing shed since May, all of it secret and clumsy. That September I found Pell standing under the two trunks with the ink tin open, and he was pressing a little heart into the back of his own hand to test the stamp. He looked up, caught me watching, and then pressed it onto my wrist before I could step away.

The mark faded in a week, but I kept the crate tally for that day in my jacket pocket for years, and it still says two trees, one heart, and no charge.
