Witch ambigram lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the word witch written in a flowing, calligraphic ambigram, a design that reads the same when rotated 180 degrees. The letters are solid white strokes with pointed, tapering ends on a plain black background. The composition is centred and horizontal, with no body part or shading visible.

Nan kept the sign on the back gate for forty years, and nobody in Hollin Bottom ever read it properly. It hung from two iron hooks above the rhubarb, a plank painted black with the word cut into it in white letters that leaned and swooped like ink still wet. People walked past it on their way to the chapel and thought it was a name, or a bit of ornament, or nothing at all.

I was nine when she showed me how it worked. She stood me on the upturned water butt, held the plank steady, and turned it slowly through a half circle until the letters flipped over and sat exactly where they had been before. "Same word, both ways up," she said. "Whatever you are, it keeps its shape when the world turns on you."

The vicar's wife came round the spring after the frost took the apple blossom. She had a cough and a list of complaints about the garden wall, and she stopped at the gate and frowned at the plank. "What's that say?" she asked. I was pulling bindweed by the path. Nan didn't look up from her seedlings. "It says what it says, Mrs Penrose. Read it from the other side."

Mrs Penrose walked round to the lane, squinted, and went pale. She hurried off without her cough mixture. I never found out what she thought she had seen, only that the word on that gate is the same whichever way you hold it, and that by the next Sunday the whole village had decided it was a name after all.
