Black monoline handwritten script reading Riddikulus on a plain white background, a lettering tattoo design shown without a body placement.

Riddikulus handwritten script design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single word, Riddikulus, followed by an exclamation mark, drawn in a thin, joined, handwritten script in solid black ink. The strokes are even and uniform in weight, with a looped capital R and a flowing baseline. The word sits centred on a plain white background with generous empty space around it, so it reads as a stencil or flash style design rather than a photograph of skin.

The thing in the wardrobe had Grandad's flat cap on and no face to speak of, and it was taking its time about coming out. Mum stood on the landing in her dressing gown, holding the torch like a cricket bat. Ellie, who was six and had opinions, asked me whether it was allowed in the house.

'Say it with me,' I said, because I was nine and had read the library copy of the book twice. We had made the rule in the spring, after the boiler man's shadow frightened the cat: any fright that came calling had to be told it was ridiculous, loudly and with feeling. Nobody had ever checked whether it worked. We had never needed to.

We shouted it together. 'Riddikulus!' The cap wobbled, then sprouted a pair of yellow wellies, then fell over them. The thing sat down in the hall and began, with great dignity, to hiccup. Ellie laughed so hard she wet herself a little, and Mum, who had been pointing the torch at the ceiling the whole time, laughed too.

Grandad, it turned out, had been wedged behind a box of Christmas paper since teatime, looking for the good scissors. He came out swearing mildly about the wellies and never did say where he'd found them. Ellie still keeps the torch by her bed, though she has not been frightened of the dark since, and she points it at the wardrobe every night just to check.
