Serendipity script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A monoline drawing of the word Serendipity in flowing cursive script, with the S, the long descenders of the p and y, and the dotted i and crossed t forming the main features. The strokes are uniform black lines with no shading, set against a plain light grey background. The lettering fills most of the frame, with the word centred and cleanly spaced.

Dear Ruth,

You will think I've gone soft, but I want to tell you about the ferry that didn't sail on Tuesday. The Kittiwake had a cracked bearing, so the whole harbour at Wrenmouth stood about in oilskins cursing the gulls, and I was stuck by the chandlery waiting for a spare part that never came. I went in to buy string and found a shelf of dog-eared paperbacks, one a Maigret with its cover torn off, and tucked inside it a pressed sea pink and a receipt for a haircut from 1971.
Then old Mr Pascoe, who runs the chandlery and has never once in my hearing finished a sentence, asked whether I'd mind holding the other end of a rope while he measured it. We stood in the wind and he told me, in pieces, that the man who owned the shop before him kept a pencil behind his ear and wrote down the name of every boat that came in, just in case. I have no idea what that has to do with anything, except that I found myself writing down the boats too, and by evening I had a list, a tide table, and an invitation to tea from a retired lighthouse keeper called Edie Vosper, who bakes saffron buns the size of fists.
I wanted you to know I've stopped checking the timetable. The Kittiwake will sail when she's mended, and I'm in no hurry. Edie says the best things in Wrenmouth arrive late and sideways, like a parcel for the wrong address that turns out to have been meant for you.
Write soon, and tell me whether you still have Dad's pencil.
Love, Margaret
