The last waltz was always the one the band played twice, because Walter at the upright could never find the end of the sheet music. Dora stood by the cloakroom hatch with her ticket tin and counted coats while the trumpet lifted over the crowd, the same eight bars coming round again as if they had nowhere better to be. In October the swallows should have been gone from the Saltcombe pier, but one had stayed. It sat on the sill of the open fire door, too late and too stubborn to leave, and Dora watched it through the gap while she counted. On the back of a spare raffle ticket she drew a loop lying on its side, the sign the old music-hall comic used to chalk on the stage for encores. Go out, come back, go out again. Frank leaned over her shoulder and said that was a poor sort of promise, and she said it was the only sort she trusted.

When the band started the waltz for the third time, Frank held out his hand and this time she did not tell him anything at all. She took it, and he led her out between the tables, and through the gap in the door the swallow lifted from the sill, circled the bulb above the bandstand in a long figure of eight, and then went out into the dark over the sea.
