Small outlined heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart drawn as a single thin black outline sits on the side of the ankle. The linework is even and unshaded, and the heart is the only design element. Warm light and a denim sneaker collar fill the rest of the frame.

The lift at Harrow Point has been out since Tuesday, so you take the stairs with the shopping looped over your wrists, counting landings under your breath. On the eleventh floor someone has drawn a heart in the grime of the window, one thin unbroken line, the kind a child makes without lifting the pen. You stop to look at it because nothing else in the block is that tidy.

Mrs Adeyemi on nine says it was the Kowalski boy, who is nineteen, fixes bikes in the car park and has never once been caught with a marker. She says it like a confession she is too pleased to make. You tell her the heart is too careful for a boy. She laughs and says that is exactly why she likes you, you notice things that are not yours to notice.
Each morning the heart is still there, and each morning you find yourself checking it, the way you check the gas meter. Then on Thursday a second heart appears beside the first, a little wonky, drawn in the same black ink, and under it in capitals: NOT YOURS. You stand on the landing with your keys between your teeth and feel absurdly, entirely seen.
You never learn who drew them. Instead you buy a fine-tipped pen from the newsagent on Dunmore Road, and on Friday you add a small heart of your own to the ledge, and beneath it one word: Mine. On Saturday morning the reply is waiting, underlined twice, asking whether you fancy the stairs again tomorrow.
