Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A mirror selfie of a woman in a black bikini and open white knit cardigan, holding a phone up so her face is out of frame. Dear Nan,

The stew caught on the bottom of the big pot again on Tuesday, and Bosun Mackie blamed the ship's cat, which is a lie because the cat hasn't been near the galley since Plymouth. I scraped the black off with a spatula at four in the morning and told nobody. You'd have laughed. You always said I cooked like I was trying to win an argument with the oven.

We're two days out from Cape Finisterre now, the sea gone the colour of pewter, and the wind has finally decided which way it wants to go. Last night I stood on the aft deck with a cup of stewed tea and looked at the compass card in the wheelhouse window, the old brass one with its star points worn soft by a hundred years of thumbs. It put me in mind of the drawing you made me when I was nine, the eight-pointed star you copied off the lid of a biscuit tin. You told me a star was just a promise you could steer by. I didn't understand you then.

I had the same star inked on my arm in Lisbon, done by a lad in a back room who smelled of clove oil and kept a kettle going the whole time. He charged me forty pounds and wouldn't take a tip. It's darker than I wanted, and the shading has gone a bit blue at the edges, but when I'm kneading dough at the long table I catch it out of the corner of my eye and it reminds me which way is home.

Captain says we make port on Friday if the weather holds. Save me a plate of something green and don't let Aunt Ruth near the sausages.

Love, Danny
