Infinity symbol lettering on the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo forms an infinity symbol made from the phrase Live the life you love, with some words in print capitals and others in handwritten script. The linework is thin and crisp, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The design is centred across the ribs, with a hand partly visible at the top left edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp room board at Scarrow Drift was for shift numbers and nothing else, chalked in capitals by whoever had the early turn. On the morning Dad was due back on the face after his chest, my mother took the chalk from its string and wrote across the bottom in her chapel rota hand. She made the words run round in a loop, the way the cable runs off the winding drum and back again, and she didn't stop when she reached the edge.

Mr Forster came through at half six with his tin of whitewash and his clipboard. He read the board, then read it again, and asked her whether she thought the Coal Board paid for chalk so women could write poetry on it. My mother said the Coal Board paid for a great deal of nonsense and she would take the chalk home with her if he liked. He went off muttering about shift numbers. She stood there with her hand on the string until the whistle went for the first cage.

Dad came up at the end of the day with coal dust in the creases of his neck and the lamp still warm on his helmet. He stood in front of the board for a long time, and then he laughed, a rough sound from the bottom of him, and read the words out loud to the lads coming off the shift behind him. One by one they read them too, boys who had never once been asked what they wanted, and they walked home along the rows with the words going round in their heads like a cable that never ran out.
