Script quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote runs across two lines on the upper back, with the letters in a flowing handwritten style. The thin, even linework is set against warm, slightly reddened skin, with the subject's neck and hair visible at the top of the frame. Framed prints on a pale wall form the background, and the composition is centred on the text.

The new owners want to turn the floor into a bingo hall, and I told them they could have the chandeliers over my dead body, which Mrs Abernethy says is a poor bargaining position for a woman of seventy-one.

I went up to the attic on Thursday and found the tin with your letters in it, the ones you sent from Leeds when your mother was ill. I read them twice with the kettle going cold beside me. You always wrote in that looping hand as though each word had somewhere important to be, and I have decided, rather late, that you were right to take the long way round the page. Nobody in this town writes like that any more. Even the council notices come printed in a font that looks like it is apologising.
So I am coming on Saturday, last waltz or not, and I am bringing the blue dress. If you still have the knack of spinning me out and back in without looking, I will not say a word about my knees. Meet me by the cloakroom at eight. I will be the one standing up straight.
