Infinity symbol on a toe

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black infinity symbol is tattooed across the base of the middle toe on a foot. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the outline is clean. The foot rests on a dark surface, with the toes and nails in focus and the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The lift in Calder Point has been making the same circuit since March, up from the ground floor, across to the eighth, down through the car park and back to the lobby as if it had somewhere to be. Mr Pell in flat 14 has written to the council four times. You are the one they send, because you are the only caretaker who has never been frightened of a lift shaft.

On the seventh floor you open the panel and find the cable running through the pulley in a figure eight, a loop folded over itself the way a child draws a sleeping snake or a sum that will not come out. Someone must have threaded it wrong in 1968 and nobody checked, because the thing has run for fifty years with its small mistake. You sit on the landing with your back to the cold wall, torch in your teeth, and trace the grease along the steel until you can count every turn.

Downstairs, Mr Pell is waiting by the post boxes with his tartan trolley. He wants to know how long. You tell him it is only a rethreading, an afternoon's work, and he nods as though he expected worse. Then he asks whether the lift was always going to end up back where it started, and you say that is what a loop is for, and he says he has always thought so.

You run the cable straight, one clean line from the motor to the car, and the lift rises to the top and stops as a lift should. The next morning it climbs, opens its doors on the eighth floor, and Mr Pell steps out, looks both ways along the corridor, then steps back in to ride it down again, just to feel it arrive somewhere new.
