Scissors and dashed cut line on a toe

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot showing a small black tattoo of a pair of open scissors with a dashed line running up toward the toe. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The foot fills most of the frame against a pale, textured background, with blue glitter nail polish on the toenails.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, you lot, and mind the sawdust. My gran followed the Pellew Brothers' show from Carlisle to Penzance, and she swore on the centre pole that the thread-cutter came with it. Not a man, mind. A pair of black iron tailor's shears that belonged to a seamstress who stitched the big top after the fire at Wigan in 1911. Every spring she ran a stick of blue chalk along the canvas in a dashed line, from the ticket booth to the pay gate, and every spring she cut along it, so the tent came back a little shorter and the crowds came back a little closer.

The last season, the Brothers wanted the tent to take in the whole of Harrow Field, and the seamstress flatly refused. She said the shears only cut where the chalk had been laid honestly. So the owner, a fellow with rings on every finger, took the shears himself and drew his own dashes straight across the Pellew name on the banner. Next morning the banner was in two halves on the grass, and the gate had shifted itself a yard to the left, where nobody had chalked anything at all.

My gran said she stood at that gate with a ticket in her fist and watched the dashed line walk on ahead of her, out past the caravans and the dead lamps, into the dark where the field met the lane. She never found the seamstress, and she never found the banner. But she kept the ticket, and it still had a little blue chalk on the corner, and it still points one way. Mind your feet on the way out, and don't go following any lines that aren't drawn by somebody you know.
