Small cross tattoo on the side of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a foot resting on grey carpet, viewed from above. A small black cross, drawn with thin single-line strokes, sits on the outer edge of the foot near the midfoot. The tattoo is shown in sharp focus against softly blurred skin and carpet, with the coral toenails providing the only other colour.

Mrs Hollis had kneaded the first dough of the morning in the dark for thirty winters, and she never once let the boy near the proving baskets until the bells of St Brannoc's had gone four. On the morning of the frost he came down the back stairs anyway, carrying the lamp, and found her standing over the slab with her sleeves rolled and a thin knife in her fist. She was not cutting bread. She was scoring the top of a single loaf, slowly, two lines crossing near its middle, the way a farmer marks a gatepost. The lines were so fine the flour barely lifted.

"Why a cross," he asked, "when there's no feast?"

She didn't look up. "The carter's wife is due Thursday. Her husband went over the Scar road in October with the cart and didn't come back. Somebody has to mark the loaf that goes on her step. Most days it's only bread." He watched the steady wrist and the pale crust rising once she slid the tin into the oven. The loaf came out an hour later, dark brown, the cross opened up like a split seam. Mrs Hollis wrapped it in a cloth and set it on the sill for the boy to carry up the hill before the light.

He ran the whole way. When he came back at sunrise the carter's wife was standing in her doorway with the cloth in both hands, not weeping, just holding it, and she nodded at him as if they had agreed on something.
