Scissors and dashed cut line on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot with painted pink toenails shows a small tattoo of open scissors with a dashed line running up from the blades between the second and third toes. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading. The tattoo sits near the centre of the foot against a dark background, and the scissors are the clear focal point.

The net had Davy by the sleeve before anyone thought to shout, and the Marigold was already leaning toward the black water with the whole fleet's catch hauling down her starboard side. My father was at the winch, shouting numbers he'd never once got wrong. I pulled the long shears from the hook by the wheelhouse door, the ones he used for baiting, and held them out in both hands like they might bite.

He had taught me the rule when I was small enough to sit on the net bins. Never cut toward a man. Cut where the line is drawn. He'd made me trace the cut on the back of an old chart with a ruler and a pencil, a dashed line running from the mesh down to the knot, so I'd know where the twine would give. Follow the dashes, Nell, not your fright.
So I followed them. The blades bit through the twine in three quick snaps, and Davy came free onto the planks with his oilskin torn and his mouth open, swearing at the sea as if it had personally wronged him. The Marigold sat up like a dog shaking off rain.
That winter, when the nets were spread across the loft floor and the gulls were shrieking at the gutters, I took the chart out again and inked the dashes over in blue, all the way from the harbour wall to the open water. Davy asked what I was doing. I told him it was for whoever came after us, so they'd know which way to cut.
