Infinity symbol tattoo on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small infinity symbol is tattooed in black ink on the back of a person's neck, just below the hairline. The linework is thin and even, with the figure-eight shape drawn in a single clean outline. The photograph shows the back of the head and shoulders in a grey top, with a pale blue sea and sky blurred in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

"The mower never has to stop, if you lay the lawn like a figure of eight," your father used to say. Now you are kneeling on the gravel at Hollins Cottage with a trowel in one hand and a string line in the other, and the morning is warm enough that the stones still smell of last week's rain. He drew the shape in the air with his cane, two loops crossing at the middle, and told you the old gardeners in Lowestoft called it the lazy eight, because nobody had to lift a wheel to turn.

You pin the string at the crossing, where the two paths meet and never quite part, and walk the first loop out to the box hedge. Mrs Pyke leans over the fence with a mug of tea and asks whether you are building a maze. You tell her it is only a path that goes somewhere and comes back. She says that sounds like her husband's pension, and laughs at her own joke for longer than it deserves.

By the third week the figure is finished. Gravel crunches under your boots on the left loop, and bees hum in the lavender on the right. You walk it slowly, once, then again, and find you cannot say where one circle ends and the other begins, which was always the difficulty with his drawings and, you suspect, the reason he never finished the path himself.

On the last morning you wet the stones so the pattern shows dark against the pale grey. You stand at the crossing and look down at it whole: two rings joined at a single point, a line that never has to lift from the page.
