Infinity symbol with birds and script 'always'
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo shows an infinity symbol drawn in a thin, continuous line. Three small bird silhouettes rise above the left loop, and the word always is written in cursive script along the right loop. The photograph is black and grey, with the tattoo centred on the forearm against soft shading of the skin.

The swallows had not yet come back to the barn when the bus pulled up at the crossing, and the officer in the glass booth asked you, without looking up, what you meant to do on the other side. You said your sister's name. You said Marta, and that she was waiting at the bus shelter in Słubice with a flask of coffee she would not drink. He stamped the page twice, as if one stamp might not be enough to hold a person in place.

Marta had always said birds did not need papers. She had drawn them for you on the back of a bus ticket when you were nine: three quick strokes above a loop she called the lazy eight, and she told you the loop meant the things that never ran out. You laughed and said that was not how sums worked. She wrote the word underneath in her looping hand, always, and then crossed the bridge with her pockets full of your mother's buttons.
Out past the barrier the river was loud with meltwater. Beyond the fence a line of birds came low over the reeds, rising and dropping, and you counted them the way she taught you: three, three, and then nothing for a long moment. Marta's shelter was empty. The coffee cup on the bench was cold, though it still showed a faint ring of condensation where someone had set it down and lifted it again.
You stood there until the bus driver leaned on his horn. Then you took a ticket from your coat, the same kind of ticket, and wrote a line under her word with the pen from the booth. Always, you wrote, and you pushed it through the slot for the people going back the other way.
