Heartbeat line with dog and paw print
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo shows a continuous heartbeat line that runs across the skin, with an outlined heart at the left end and a paw print at the right. A small dog's head with dotted markings sits in the centre of the line. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the photograph is taken close up in black and white against a dark background.

The ferry to Skerrow leaves at twenty past seven when the wind allows, and by the time the cloud comes down over the headland you have stopped checking the sky and started checking the dog. Bramble is nine, grey at the muzzle, and she has never once waited on the slipway without you. Tonight she sits at the end of the pier with her spotted ears flat against the wind, staring at the empty water as though it owes her money.

The islanders say old Tam Corrie once rowed a sick ewe across the Sound in a gale and the sea lay flat for him the whole way. You have heard the story four times in the Ship Inn and never believed a word of it, yet here you are on the cold concrete, two fingers pressed beneath Bramble's jaw, counting. Quick and steady, a little fast. You count against the slap of the harbour and the tick of halyards, and out past the breakwater a light blinks twice, which means the boat has seen you.
Tam brings the boat in with the engine coughing and the vet's bag wedged on the thwart between two lobster creels. Nobody speaks while the dog is lifted down. Afterwards the rain thins to a drizzle and the lamps of the village come on one by one along the shore. You walk home slowly, the lead slack in your hand, and Bramble keeps pace with you the whole way.
By morning the tide has taken every print from the slipway except one, pressed deep and square beside the rusted ring bolt, as if she had stopped there to make sure you were still behind her.
