Infinity symbol with feather and script on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line infinity symbol runs across the inner wrist, with the word life written in script inside the left loop and live in the right loop. A shaded black feather sits on the left side of the symbol, adding soft tonal contrast to the otherwise thin linework. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin and a dark background, centred on the wrist.

The feather had been in the lost property cupboard since March, tucked inside a left glove nobody had claimed, and Maud kept meaning to throw it out. It was a grey pinion with the quill still stiff, and whenever she opened the cupboard it caught the light from the platform the way the waiting room windows did at four o'clock, as if it had somewhere else to be.

Tobias came back for it on a wet Thursday, when the 16:42 to Carlisle had been cancelled and the bench outside was crowded with people pretending not to wait. He was a thin man in a station anorak, and he didn't ask about the glove. He asked about the feather, then took a notebook from his pocket and opened it on the counter. Inside, a pencilled loop ran across the page, and in its left curve someone had written life, and in the right, live, the two words chasing each other round the bend without ever quite meeting.
"My sister drew that on the back of a timetable," he said. "She was waiting for a train to Edinburgh when she decided she'd leave the job, the husband and the flat, all in one afternoon. She sent me the page with one line: which way round is it?" Maud turned the notebook a quarter turn, then back. The loop did not care which way it was read. It went on, the same line both ways, and the feather lay between the two words like a full stop nobody had asked for.
She found him a pencil stub and a clean slip of ticket card. He wrote on it slowly, then pushed it across the counter. On one side was live. On the other, in the same careful hand, was life. "Tell her it's the same train," Maud said, and handed him the feather.
