Fine line black script reading always with a small pink heart at the end, on the outer side of a foot near the ankle.

Always script with heart on foot

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A fine line black script word, always, runs diagonally across the outer side of a foot, ending in a small outlined heart. The linework is thin and even, with the heart filled in pale pink. The skin is lit softly against a dark background, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the rope. Pass that flask along before the wind gets into it. This is the tale of the Marguerite Lowe, a barque out of Hull that spent fourteen months round the Horn with copper in her hold and a cook aboard who could not spell his own name.

Tobias Fenn was that cook, and every fortnight he carried a letter in his head with nowhere to post it. His wife Ada kept the chandlery on Scale Lane. She had little schooling, so her letters came folded around a single line of ink that ran from one corner to the other without the pen ever lifting, a word she had practised on the slate until her wrist ached. The word was always. At the foot of it she drew a small heart, and the mate swore that heart was the only part Tobias ever read properly.

Nobody aboard could make out the rest. The bosun guessed it was a weather report and the carpenter reckoned it was a bill of sale. Tobias didn't mind. He would sit on an upturned bucket by the galley, running his thumb along that line the way you'd follow a rope in the dark, and say the word aloud to the gulls, who never once argued with him.

When the Lowe finally came up the Humber, Ada was waiting on the quay with the shop shut behind her. Tobias stepped off the gangway and held up the last letter, creased soft as cloth. She didn't need to read it. He only opened it to the foot of the page and showed her the heart, still pale pink where the salt had never reached it.
