Nobody remembers the year the swallows came down over Hollin Lane and wouldn't leave the tarmac. I do. Thirty-one of us stood under the bus shelter at quarter to four, and every one of us was waiting for someone else to say the bus was late.

They rose off the bins, swung out over the allotments, bent back round the chimney of the Co-op and came down over the same bins again. Round and round, as if someone had drawn the number lying on its side and told them to keep to the line.

Here is the thing I've kept all these years. Every time they came back past the bus shelter, a different one of you would lift your head. Carol Sumner would laugh, and then Ashok would go quiet, and the birds kept on turning as if they had all the time in the world.

So I'll say it plain, the way Mrs Pargeter would have wanted: stay strong, believe, and keep going round. Somebody will always be coming back past the shelter. Now who's getting the drinks?
