Infinity symbol with dragonfly
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single continuous black ink line forms an infinity symbol, with a small dragonfly drawn on the left loop and two dots near the crossing on the right. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with slightly heavier strokes where the line curves. The image is monochrome and centred on a plain off-white background.

The path round Caerlyn ran the same way it had when the castle was whole, a figure of eight worn into the turf by sheep and by my grandmother. She walked it every evening after the chapel bell, out past the gatehouse, down along the moat, up the ridge and back through the broken postern, and she never once cut across the middle where the two loops met.

I thought it was superstition until the summer the surveyors came with their tapes and pegs. The council wanted the ruin fenced for safety, and one of the young men drove a stake right at the crossing. Gran stood over it with her stick and said nothing for a long time. Then she pulled the stake out, dropped it in the moat, and told him the dragonflies came down to that exact spot to drink, and he would have to fence the sky to stop them.
That evening a pair of them hung over the reeds where the two loops almost touched. One settled on the stone of the postern and stayed there, rubbing its wings, while she watched it the way she might watch a letter being read. 'Your grandad said you'd never reach the end of a loop,' she said. 'You only reach the place where you pass yourself.'
I went back the next evening with a pencil and drew it on the back of a feed bill: the long curve, a small mark for the insect, and two dots where we had stood. She died that winter. I folded the bill small and slid it under a loose stone in the postern wall, where the path turns back on itself.
