Abstract bird and loop on wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two stylised bird-like shapes, one small and one larger, joined by a curved stroke that ends in a teardrop loop. The linework is bold and solid in black ink with smooth, even edges and no shading. The photograph is taken close up on pale skin, with a blue bottle and a sink edge blurred in the background.

The wagtail came to Harrowgate signal box in March, the year they took the old semaphore down. Nobody wanted the box any more, so Ada Pickering left the lamp room door propped open and let the bird build in the coiled cable drum. I was the porter then, sixteen and sweeping leaves off Platform Two, and I thought the bird was daft to nest where the trains shook the glass.

By May there were two of them, the big grey parent and a speck of a chick with its beak always open. The chick would not fly. It hopped along the coping stone, tail flicking, and whenever the 7.14 came through the parent dropped down beside it and fussed like a kettle. Ada said that was the bargain of it: you stay close until you can't, and then you go. She had buried a husband and two sons, and she talked about birds the way other women talked about the weather.
In June the chick went missing. We searched the sidings for an hour before Ada found it at dusk, tangled in a loop of fishing line caught on the points lever, one leg wrapped tight and the rest of it gone quiet. I cut it free with the penknife my dad gave me, and she held it in her cupped hands until it blinked. The big bird circled the lever for three days. On the fourth morning they were both gone, flying low over the goods yard towards the river, the young one keeping pace.
Ada never mentioned them again, but she left the lamp room door open all summer. The next March a new pair came, and I still find myself checking the lever for line before I sweep Platform Two.
