Infinity symbol with birds and 'be brave' on wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol runs across the inner wrist, with the words 'be brave' in cursive script inside the lower left loop. Three bird silhouettes in flight sit along the upper right loop. The tattoo uses solid black ink with smooth, even lines and no shading, set against plain, lightly lit skin.

Your nan wrote those two words on the loft door in pencil, the morning the old boy from Harrogate came round with his van. Forty-one birds in crates, and not one of them had flown a race longer than the ferry crossing. Don't look at me like that. Nobody's asking you to fly anything yet.

We tossed them off the back of Shaw's Mill at six, before the milk round started. Three went up together and wheeled over the gasworks, grey against a sky that couldn't make its mind up. The rest sat on the slates and sulked. I stood there with my hands in my coat, certain the lot of them would head straight home to Harrogate and leave me holding an empty loft and a debt.
The three came back over the chimney stacks, one at a time, and then the rest followed the way water finds a drain. I never knew which of them had shown the others the way. Your nan always said it was the one with the ragged tail, the one she named Doris after the woman who sold her the eggs.
So when you ask why I never painted a sign on the van, that's why. You don't need a sign. You need a loft door with two words on it and somebody daft enough to open it at dawn. Pass me that tin of crumbs, would you? They'll be down in a minute, and they'll want their breakfast.
