The Dunmore circular has no terminus, only a clock that keeps resetting, so you stopped asking the guard where it ends. Tonight you sit on the bench under the iron canopy at platform four with a paper cup going cold beside you, watching the board flick from Greave to Kell and back to Greave again. Someone has scratched LOVE into the timetable frame with a biro, the letters leaning as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere.

Marian used to say the line was drawn by a clerk who had been jilted, that he routed it round in a figure of eight so nobody could ever quite leave. You told her that was nonsense. She said it on the night she bought two tickets to the same stop and then sat on the wrong side of the carriage for six stations, laughing at everything you were too serious to say out loud.

Now the 23:14 pulls in, doors sighing open, and you stand, then sit, then stand again. The guard calls the names of the stops in the same tired order, Greave, Kell, Hollin Cross, Dunmore, and the rhythm of them is almost a lullaby. Every circuit brings you back under the same clock face and the same red brick arch, to the place where the rails cross over each other like two lines drawn in one pen stroke.

You climb aboard and do not take a seat. At Hollin Cross the doors open on an empty platform with a single cup on the bench, and you realise you have been waiting for her there for three years. The train, patient as the sign above it, goes round again.
