Continuous line script word love with red heart
Fine line · Mixed · Flash
A single unbroken black line forms the word love in looping script, with the lowercase o and v drawn as part of one continuous stroke. A solid red heart sits within the v, providing the only colour in the image. The design is centred on a plain white background with generous space around it.

Put the kettle back on, you'll want something to hold while I get to the bit about the pen. No, sit down. The pen belonged to Ambrose Tull, and he never once lifted it off the paper. Not for letters, not for ledgers, not for the bills of lading that came up the harbour steps every Tuesday. My mother said he'd ruin his hand doing it, but he'd laugh and say a word worth writing is worth one breath.

He courted Winnie Ash across the counter of the chandlery for three summers, writing her orders in that unbroken hand. Every slip ended in a loop, like a rope cast off the quay. She kept them in a biscuit tin under the stairs, and the tin is still here if you want to see it, though the paper has gone soft as cloth.
The winter the cable came ashore, Ambrose was the only man on the jetty who could read the chart without his spectacles. Then the squall came off Hoyle Point, the lamp went out, and the boat went out after it with him in her. They found one red oilskin sleeve and nothing else. Winnie wrote his name across the back of the last order and left the pen where it lay.
Every spring after, she walked down to the sand and drew the word with a stick, one stroke, never lifting. The tide took it back before she reached the end. Then she'd climb the steps to the chandlery and ask for a red pencil, and she'd colour in the dip of the v, the one bit of colour she ever allowed herself. Go on, love, drink your tea before it stews.
