Infinity symbol with flowers and vines

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing of a figure-eight infinity symbol formed by a single looping vine. Three flowers with dotted shading and small leaves sit along the curves, and spiral tendrils finish the ends. The design is drawn in black on a plain off-white paper background, centred and filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming off the canal all morning, and Tomasz had stopped trying to keep the cardboard boxes dry. He sat under the awning of the fruit stall at Hallam Street market with a flask of tea going cold between his knees, watching the lamp above the seed merchant flicker on and off in the wet. Across the aisle, Nadia was arguing with a man who wanted her cut-price lilies for the price of daisies.

She had come to the stall three winters running, always with a sketchbook under her coat. Tomasz had never asked to see it. He had only noticed that she drew whatever was in front of her while she waited for buses, the vine lines of the bindweed on the railings, the loops of a dropped length of wire. Last week she had shown him a page with a single looping stem that crossed itself in the middle, and she had called it a joke that only worked if you drew it slowly.

He bought her a paper cone of chestnuts when the shower thinned, and she gave him the sketchbook without a word. The loop was there again, now with three flowers pinned along its curves and tendrils curling off the ends like the ones on his grandmother's ironwork gate. Under it she had written, in small square capitals, MEET ME WHERE THE LINE CROSSES.

He looked up. The lamp above the seed merchant flickered, went dark, and came back, and in the brief dark she was already standing in the middle of the aisle with the rain running off her hood, waiting for him to find the crossing point.
