Infinity symbol with geometric ornament
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of an infinity symbol on lined notebook paper. At the left end, the loop is joined to an angular geometric ornament made of diamond and triangular shapes around a small central dot. The linework is uniform and bold, with no shading or colour, and the design fills most of the frame.

Tuesday, 14 March. Rain since four, so the theodolite stays in its box and I have been at the kitchen table with the ink pen, drawing the loop the old drovers' track makes above Cwm Dulas. Mrs Pritchard at the post office says it was a cattle road before it was a lane, and that the men who walked it never once reached the end, because the end was always the start again.

I have tried to tell Owen that a surveyor should not believe such things. He wants figures. Eight miles out, eight miles back, and the track crosses itself at the farm gate where someone has scratched a cross into the gatepost. I have drawn it twice now. On the first sheet the crossing looked like a mistake, so I went over it again, heavier, until it looked deliberate.
At the western end, where the track drops to the river, I put the ornament: the sharp shapes the old maps used for a compass rose, with a small dot in the middle like a point of light. Owen laughed and said I had made a broken star. Perhaps. But the star is where the walkers turned for home, and I think that is what the drovers wanted marked, a place to stop and then go back.
Tomorrow I will take the chain out and measure the loop properly. I expect it will come to sixteen miles and a little over, as the sums always do. I will write the figure in the margin in pencil and leave the drawing as it is, the line running round and back into itself, with no mark to say where it began.
