Infinity symbol with script love
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A single unbroken black line forms an infinity symbol, with the word love written in cursive script inside its right loop. The linework is even and monoline, with no shading. The design is shown in black ink on a plain light grey background, centred and uncropped.

On Scarrow the ferry rope was never cut. Every winter the women re-laid it along the seabed from the north quay to the skerry, and every winter the old men argued about where it began. Ismay Gorrie, who mended nets on the quay wall, always said it began where it ended, and nobody believed her until the year her husband Ewan rowed out past the skerry in the grey and did not come back by dusk.

The fog came down like wet wool. Ismay sat on the wall with the rope across her knees, running it through her fingers and counting the turns the way her mother had taught her. At the knot she found a small mark pressed into the tar, a word cut by someone long dead. The letters were twisted and she could not read them, so she sang the old counting song and pulled hand over hand toward the place where the two loops of the rope crossed each other in the water.
Ewan came up out of the mist at the crossing, rope burning his palms, his boat knocking against the rocks behind him. He said he had gone round the skerry and round again and somehow come back to the same stone. Ismay told him the rope only ever brought you home by the road that kept coming back to you. He laughed and said that was a fisherman's answer. She said it was the only one the rope gave. Ismay never learned to read the word in the tar, but she knew its shape by heart, and each evening she traced it on the quay wall with one finger, a long loop that came round to itself.
