Infinity symbol with script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A handwritten infinity symbol forms the outline of the design, with cursive words looping along both halves of the figure. Two small hearts sit at the outer ends of the loop, one on each side. The linework is dark ink on lined paper, with no shading or colour, and the design fills the centre of the frame.

The last train was already circling when Tom Greave wrote the words on the back of a fare ticket and pushed it under the stationmaster's door. The line at Halsey Junction ran out from the platform, curved through the water meadows and came back to the same platform again, so every engine that left was sure to return. Nell Greave had gone out on the 6.10 to fetch her sister from the coast and had not come back on the 7.40, nor on the 9.15.

Old Mr Pell read the ticket and shook his head. Anyone who rode the loop, he said, was riding it for good, because the rails had no end to reach. Tom did not believe him. He bought a return, climbed aboard with a lamp and a heel of bread, and counted the rivets on the iron bridge, the sheep at the gate and the same grey heron standing in the same ditch, lap after lap.
On the ninth circuit he saw her. She was sitting on the bench at Halsey with her coat buttoned wrong and the ticket folded in her glove. She had waited since the evening he left, she said, and the train had only ever brought her back to the start. He read her the words he had written, and she read them again to herself, moving her lips over the loops of the letters.
They got off at Halsey and did not board the next engine. The signal stayed green for a long time that night, and the stationmaster swore afterwards that he never once saw the lamp go out on the loop.
