Infinity symbol with script names on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black infinity symbol is tattooed on the inner wrist, with one name in cursive script on the left loop and another on the right. The linework is thin and even, and the letters flow into the loop of the symbol. The tattoo is in black ink only, shown against a softly blurred green background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The towpath ran in a long figure eight that autumn, because Dad had never trusted a straight line. He steered the barge Halcyon round the bend at Wrenbury, then back again, and every time we passed the same stone bridge he would tap the tiller and say, there, that's where we started. My brother Ivo counted the loops out loud. I kept my eyes on the cut ahead.

Mum had painted our names on the cabin side the year they bought her, Ivo on the port side, me on the starboard, the letters running into the curve of a scroll she'd drawn herself. The paint had faded to grey by the time Ivo went off to work the ferries on the coast. He wrote every Sunday from a different harbour, always on the same blue paper, always signing his name with a tail that swept back under itself.

The night before I was due to take the Halcyon south alone, I found him rubbing at the paint with a rag and turpentine. Leave it, I said. He shook his head and kept at the loop of his own name until it shone wet and dark. Then he drew the scroll back through it in one stroke, never lifting the brush, so the two names met in the middle like the crossing of a rope.

I took her south in the morning. At every lock since, I have looked at that cabin side, and the two names still run round the same shape, the one that never ends where it starts. Dad says the trick of a figure eight is that you can follow it forever without once having to turn back. I have never told him I think that is a kind of lie.
