Black fine line infinity symbol joined to the cursive word dad, tattooed on the inner forearm in a black and grey photograph.

Infinity symbol with script word on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms an infinity symbol on the left, joined to the cursive word dad on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no visible shading, and the tattoo sits against smooth skin. The black and grey photograph is taken close up, with the tattoo centred and the lower corners softly darkened.

Dear Dad, the 17:42 has been cancelled again, so I'm writing this on the back of a timetable at Hollin Bridge, sat on the bench where you taught me to count carriages. Nobody comes through here now except the freight trains and the cats from the signal box.

Mum finally let me clear the loft. Inside your tin of brass fittings I found the receipt from the platform clock repair in 1987, and the note you'd tucked under it: 'Keep it running, whatever the timetable says.' I have been trying. Mrs Okafor at the bakery asked after you on Tuesday and I said you were on a long shift, which is what you'd have wanted me to say.

What I keep coming back to is the loop. On frosty mornings when the trains ran late, you used to trace a figure of eight on the windscreen with your thumb and tell me it meant going round for ever, and that nothing on the line ever really ended, it just came back changed. I thought it was daft. Now I think you meant the timetable, not the trains.

The 17:42 has just pulled in, two minutes early for once. I'm going to get on it and I'll write again from the other end. Love, Jess.
