Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a small monogram of the letters N and L in flowing copperplate-style script, placed on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with a mix of fine hairlines and slightly heavier strokes at the letter joins. The image is black and white, and the monogram sits centrally on the wrist against a plain background of fabric.

The last cabin door of the Mary Ellen still carried a ghost of the name the previous owners had lettered and then wanted gone. Nell Harrow knelt on the wet towpath with her mahl stick braced against the frame and her sable loaded with gold size, and she did not look up when the lock-keeper's dog barked at a passing gull.

Her grandfather had taught her that copperplate was mostly patience. You let the pen lift before the stroke ran out, and you let the thick line swell only where the hand wanted to press. He used to say the N and the L should share a single breath, because a monogram was two people agreeing to stand close. The new owners, the Ashdowns, a retired couple from Leeds, had asked for just their initials on the door and nothing else, which Nell thought was the sensible way to say it.

When she scraped the old varnish with a palette knife, two faint letters came up through the grain. Someone had scored them into the wet paint years ago, with a nail or the tip of a key, a lopsided N and an L with its tail curling off the edge. She could hardly read them, and the thought made her brush hand go still over the wood.

She did not paint over them. She drew the new monogram across the scratches so the hairlines ran through the old marks, and when the clear coat went on it sank and kept both sets of letters visible, one hand beneath the other. By dusk the brush was clean and the boat shifted gently as a cyclist rattled past on the path.
