Script quote "Let your fears go" on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A flowing script quote reading ...let your fears go. is tattooed across the forearm, with the ellipsis trailing in from the left. The linework is fine and uniform, with long looped ascenders and descenders on the letters f, y and g. The photograph is black and white, so the tattoo appears as dark grey ink on pale skin against a dark background.

The ferry-woman at Kettle Ford had one rule for anyone crossing the high pass in winter, and she gave it to Maud Harrowby the morning the snow came in sideways off the Scar. Don't look down at the water while you cross, she said, and don't carry anything you can't put down. Maud had a sack of salt cod, a brass lamp, and a letter from her brother that she had not yet opened. She tied the lamp to her belt and went up.

Halfway along the ledge the wind took her hat and she turned to watch it go, and that was when she saw the water below, black and moving, and her knees went to string. She could hear her own breath loud in the cold. Somewhere a shepherd's dog barked twice and then stopped. She thought about the letter, about what it might say, about her brother who never wrote when things were well. Her hand shook on the rock.
A voice came up from the path below, not the ferry-woman's, but thin and patient, like a woman reading aloud to herself. Let your fears go, it said, and the words trailed off the way a tune does when the singer forgets the rest. Maud laughed, which surprised her. Then she unclenched her fingers and let the sack drop. It went down into the dark without a sound, and the lamp swung on its cord, and she stepped forward onto the next stone.
She reached the far side before the light failed. The letter, when she finally opened it in the inn at Thornby, said only that he was coming home in spring. Maud folded it small and kept it in her boot, and she never again took the high pass without leaving something behind.
