With pain comes strength script tattoo
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a single line of cursive script reading "With pain comes strength" tattooed on skin. The lettering is drawn in thin, dark black linework with some variation in stroke weight, and the text runs horizontally across the centre of the frame. The skin tone is warm and the background is softly lit and plain, so the focus stays on the words.

Brother Anselm, you asked why I have stopped complaining about my hand. Here is the answer, and you may laugh, since you laughed at my first blots. Last week the abbot set me to copy the same line forty times in the cursive hand we use for letters to the bishop: With pain comes strength. He said nothing else. By the fifth copy my wrist ached so that the nib skated across the vellum. By the twentieth I was weeping over the page, and I thought of tearing it up and running down to the mill pond.

Yet the abbot came by at vespers, looked along the rows, and tapped the sheet where my ascenders leaned too far. He said the ink did not care whether I was tired. It only wanted the line to hold its shape, the strokes thin where the pen moved quickly and heavy where I paused. I asked him what the line was for. He said it was for whoever needed to read it one day, perhaps a novice who would sit where I sit and feel just as sorry for himself.
I have kept the last sheet. It is the first one that looks as though it was written by someone who did not hate the pen. The thin strokes run steady, and the loop of the W curls back on itself like a wave that has decided not to break. I am sending it so you can see what forty mornings of aching bought me. Pin it above your own desk if you like, though I suspect you will only use it to remind yourself that I was once impossible to teach.
Your friend in the scriptorium, Tobias.
