Black script tattoo reading Strength with a small heart at the end, on the inner wrist and forearm.

Strength script with heart on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the inner wrist and lower forearm showing the word Strength in flowing black script, with a small outlined heart at the right. The linework is bold and smooth, with black ink only and no shading. The pale skin and dark painted nails stand out against a checkered floor in the background.

Dear Ruth,

The rhubarb came up through the cold frame the week after you left, pink as a fist and twice as stubborn, and I have been stood over it every morning since like it owes me money. Your grandfather would have laughed. He never once got a crop in before the frost and never once stopped trying.

I found the seed packet you hid in the potting shed, the one with handwriting that slopes like it is running for a bus. Runner beans, Painted Lady. I have planted them along the fence where the wire sags, and strung the twine the way you showed me, loose enough to let the stems climb in their own time. Mrs Okafor from number nine said they would never take in this soil. She was wrong about the soil, and I was wrong about you, and I am writing to say so before I lose my nerve.

You said on the phone that you were not ready to come home, and I did not argue. I only wanted you to know that the hymn your mother sang over the washing line had a second verse, the one about holding on when the line goes slack. I have been humming it at the kettle all week, and the kettle has not complained.

Come home when the beans flower. Bring the tin of nails. The fence needs doing and I am too proud to ask the neighbour.

Love, Nan
