Black handwritten script tattoos reading Inhale love and Exhale hate across the fingers of two hands pressed together against a dark background.

Inhale love and exhale hate script on fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together with the fingers angled towards the camera, against a plain black background. Each hand carries a line of cursive script in black ink: Inhale love on the left and Exhale hate on the right, both sitting across the back of the fingers. The linework is thin and even, and the image is a close, evenly lit composition with no colour present.

You have ground the soot ink twice already this morning, and the master still wants the line redone. The physician Ptolemais, who pays in good oil and bad temper, has asked for two phrases on the wax tablet she carries to the sick. You copy them slowly, the way your father taught you to write letters that lean into the wind: Inhale love, and beneath it, Exhale hate. Your hand is steady. Your heart is not.

She comes to the workshop at dusk, smelling of myrrh and fever. She reads your copy, taps the second line with a fingernail, and says the words were never meant for her patients. Her brother sold her husband's ship to settle a debt, and she has been breathing through her teeth for a year. "Write it so I can see it while I wash my hands," she says. "Write it small enough that I cannot forget it."

So you do. You cut a reed finer than any you own and lay the strokes thin and even, the way the ink runs when the lamp is low and your own breath has slowed. You add no flourish. When you finish, the letters look like they were made by someone who has stopped arguing with the world.

She pays you in two silver coins and a jar of oil. Some weeks later a boy from the harbour finds you at the grinding stone with a message: the physician keeps the tablet on her windowsill, and when the fever wards grow loud she stands before it, draws in a long breath, and lets the other line out with it. She has never told you whether it helped. You think about that for a while, then go back to grinding ink.
