The winter the lower beck froze to its bed, Ada Pryce kept her two sons in the byre with the ewes, because the house had no coal to spare. Tom, the eldest, was quick with his tongue and slow with his hands. Wil was the reverse. They quarrelled over the one good blanket until the frost came through the slates and the quarrelling went out of them.

On the coldest night a lamb came wrong, and the ewe would not stand. Ada told the boys to breathe on the lamb's face, slow and warm, to draw it back. "Take in what you need," she said, "and let out what you can't keep." Tom drew a deep breath of the cold and blew it out in a sharp grumble about his brother's blanket. The lamb stayed still. Wil breathed in slowly, held the steam of it close to the lamb's nose, and said nothing at all.
By morning the lamb was on its feet, bleating at the gate, and the two boys sat in the straw with their fingers knitted together for warmth. Tom watched the white clouds hanging over their hands and saw how much of what he had been sending out into the world had been hard. He opened his fingers, took a long breath, and pushed the blanket across to Wil without a word.
Ada found them like that at first light and did not ask what had passed between them. She counted the ewes, counted the boys, and went in to lay the fire. Out in the yard their breath rose together in one cloud and hung above the frozen trough until the sun cleared the hill.
