Interlocking infinity loops on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows several overlapping infinity loops in a continuous black line, forming a chain-like shape across the skin. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, so the design reads as solid black ink. The composition is a close crop of the inner wrist on a pale background, with the tattoo placed diagonally across the centre of the frame.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp doesn't smoke. My mother's brother Tobias made rope in the long shed behind the Anchor, and he never once let a length go out the door with a bad lay in it. He'd walk the whole fathom with his palm, feeling for the place where the strands didn't sit true, and if he found one he'd cut it out and splice it again until it lay like a sleeping cat. The rope-walk was a hundred and forty paces, and every evening he'd walk it backwards with the hemp running through his fingers, counting under his breath.

One November the Greyhound came in with a cable that had been sent down from Scarborough, and the mate swore it was sound. Tobias ran his hand along it and stopped, and said it was a loop that would never close. The mate laughed at him. But Tobias had spent forty years learning that a line which goes round and round without an end will show its weakness at the crossing, where it doubles back on itself. He sent it back on the cart that same night.
The Greyhound went out the next morning on a new coil, and she came home in March with her sails in ribbons and her crew alive. The mate brought Tobias a bottle of rum and a curl of black ink drawn on a paper slip, a little sign he said he'd seen tattooed on a Dutch sailor in Rotterdam, two loops knotted into one line that never lifted from the page. Tobias pinned it above the bench. When they laid him out, his wrist still had a faint mark where he'd pressed the hemp to his skin a thousand times, and the paper was still there, folded in his cuff.
