Heart and infinity tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline tattoo of a heart linked with an infinity loop sits on the side of a bare ankle and heel. The thin, even linework is drawn without shading, and the design is shown in black and grey against a dark background. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with the foot and lower leg filling the rest of the composition.

Marguerite had been grafting the old Bramley trees since the first week of August, and by the last Saturday of the month her thumbs were split from the wax. He pulled the knot until the twine bit into his palm and said nothing.

The scion was a Cox cut from the north wall, pencil-thin, its buds still closed and green. She fitted it against the understock where the bark had been peeled back to the pale wet layer beneath, pressed the two wounds together and bound them. Their father had taught her that a graft holds only where green meets green. In the margin of the orchard ledger he had once drawn the idea for her: two rings overlapping, a heart pinched at its top, and a loop running through it with no start and no finish.

"Dad would have liked that you kept his book," Tom said. "He would have hated the wax on the east side."

She laughed, and the sound carried over the windfalls where the wasps were already drunk on fallen sugar. She pressed the last strip of raffia flat with her thumb, then stood and looked along the row at the trees they had planted the year they were born. One branch on the oldest tree had never been cut. She reached up, took the knife to it, and watched the first drop of sap rise on the wound, clear as dew, waiting for the new wood to answer.
