Small geometric tattoo on palm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of an open palm, with a very small tattoo sitting near the centre. The tattoo is a simple outlined geometric shape, drawn in fine, thin black linework with no shading. The hand is lit from the side against a pale background, which leaves the palm in soft shadow and makes the tattoo the clear focal point.

Dear Tom,

The frost has come down on the lower field so hard that the ewes have gone white along their backs, and Dad says it will hold until March. I have been doing the lambing book by the range because the office is too cold for ink. You'll laugh, but I've taken to sitting where you used to sit, with the diamond-paned window at my shoulder, watching the light come through it in lozenges across the flags.
The pattern has been on the floor every morning since you left. Mum says the glass came from a chapel in Boston that was pulled down, and that Grandad set it in himself the year before he died. I never looked at it properly until you were gone. Four bars of lead, one slanted, and the sun falls through and makes a little shape on the flagstones, sharp at the corners, and it moves an inch an hour as the day goes round.
Yesterday I tried to draw one on my hand with the carpenter's pencil, the way you did on the back of your wrist before the bus, so the outline would last until you came back. It smudged on the first knuckle and I gave up. Then the light came round and I held my palm flat in the gap, and for a minute there was a diamond sitting in the middle of it, exactly as you'd have wanted.
Come home for the lambing. The window is holding its shape. Your loving sister, Nell.
