Jack and Sally finger tattoos
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together, each with a single-line tattoo on the fingers: Jack Skellington on the left and Sally on the right, both standing with arms outstretched towards each other. The linework is fine and sketchy with light grey shading in places, and the ink is uniformly black and grey. The plain grey floor and dark clothing sleeves keep the focus on the skin.

Dear Maud,

You will think I have finally lost my wits, but the man who came to the church hall on Thursday was no tinker and he did not want paying in coin. He wanted a fortnight's board and the use of the cellar, and in return he gave Mr Pryce's boy two wooden dolls the size of a kipper tin, one with a skull for a head and a coat like a bat's wing, the other all stitches and patches, with eyes like two shiny buttons. He said they were for the Harvest Fair. I said nobody at the fair would know what they were. He only smiled and said that was the point.
Mr Pryce put them on the mantel above the wireless, and by Friday they had moved. Not much. Jack's long fingers had come a half inch nearer to Sally's, and her hands, which had been folded at her chest, were out, as if she were waiting on someone to cross the room. Mrs Ellery swore the cat had done it. The cat has no thumbs, Maud.
On the last night the lamp went out and I went down with a candle. The pair were standing on the floor between the chairs, fingertips touching across the rug, and when I bent to pick them up the wood was warm, the way a hand is warm after holding a cup. I put them back on the mantel and went to bed.
The fair is Saturday. I have decided I shall go, and I shall hold my own hand out to whoever is at the stall, though I suspect I am the only one who will be looking.
Yours ever, Edie
