Two hands are pressed together, with a character tattoo on each of the middle fingers. The left figure is Jack Skellington holding a red heart, and the right figure is Sally holding a matching heart, both drawn with bold black outlines and flat colour. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The winter the river froze at Maddoch Cross, the Lord of Thistlemere sent for me, because I was the only stitcher in the kingdom who could close a seam without the thread showing. He arrived at my door carrying a heart in both bony hands. It was glass, red as a fox's tongue, with a hairline crack along one side that kept opening each time he tried to hold it still.

Lady Sallow, who kept the rag market at the edge of the moor, had given it to him one harvest night, he told me, and taken it back the next morning, saying she had only lent it. Between them they had passed it back and forth for a decade, each too proud to ask for it outright. I asked him where he kept it when he was not holding it. He tapped his ribs with one finger, and the sound was hollow, and I did not laugh.

I took the heart to my workroom above the bakehouse and sat with it until the candle guttered. Glass does not mend with thread, so I wrapped it in my finest red silk and stitched the silk to a grey linen case shaped like a palm. Then I walked it up the frozen road to the rag market, where Sallow was sorting buttons into jars by moonlight.

She did not look up. 'He sent you,' she said. 'He sends everyone.' I set the little cased heart on the counter between us and unwrapped it so she could see the crack. She turned it over twice, then laid her own needle beside it and held out her other hand, palm up, the way you offer a child a coin. We stood like that until the bells rang for the new year, neither of us willing to be the first to let go.
