Mason jar and flowers on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A mason jar sits at the centre of the design, with faint lettering on its glass, surrounded by a sunflower, purple and pink flowers, a red poppy and a pink clover bloom with green leaves. The jar and petals use soft shading and highlights for a realistic look. The motifs are arranged in a loose cluster across the outer thigh, and the background shows a tattoo studio wall.

The lids had to be boiled first, and Aunt Glenys would not be hurried about it. You stood at the range with the tongs while she counted the seconds under her breath, the kitchen thick with sugar and steam, and she told you a jar of summer was only as good as its rim.

All August the verges gave up their colour to her. Clover heads went into a pan for jelly, poppy petals were pressed flat between sheets of newsprint, and the last sunflower from the allotment hung its face over the back step as if it was waiting to be asked a question. The cupboard filled with glass that caught the light and threw it back green and amber, each jar labelled in her looping capitals with the name of the field it came from.

When the shop in town agreed to take the jars, she wrapped every one in a tea towel, packed them into a wooden crate with straw, then sat on the step with a flask and told me to stop fussing. I said the jelly would keep till Christmas. She said nothing keeps that long if somebody is looking at it.

Afterwards I found one jar she had missed, pushed behind the flour tin. Clover and a single poppy petal, the glass gone cloudy at the shoulder, the lid still ringed with her handwriting. I didn't open it. I set it on the sill where the afternoon could reach it and left the window a finger's width open, so the bees could check on her summer for themselves.
