Jack Skellington holding a pumpkin on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of Jack Skellington, the skeletal character in a suit with a grinning face and spiky hair, stands with one hand on his hip and holds a carved jack-o'-lantern in the other. Bold black outlines define the figure, with soft grey shading across the suit and pumpkin. The design is centred on the outer thigh, with white lace underwear visible at the top of the frame and a flash sheet partly visible in the background.

The carters on Hollin Pass say the Pumpkin King came down the north side every October, the week the bracken turned. He wore a black coat buttoned to the throat and a grin that looked stitched on. In his left hand he carried a lantern cut from a field pumpkin, and he never once set it down.

Wat Dunnock kept the toll hut at the summit. He was a hard man with a short temper, and when the King knocked on his shutter one night and asked to be let in out of the wet, Wat told him to go round by the river like everyone else. The King only nodded and sat on the step with his lantern lit, and the rain went on all night.

In the morning Wat found the King still there, and a bargain was struck over the hearth fire. The King would take no coin for the pass. He asked only for the next traveller Wat turned away from the door. Wat had refused everyone for thirty winters, so he laughed and agreed. Then the snow came thick, a lamb went missing from a farm below, and Wat, not knowing why, went out in the drifts and carried it back under his coat.

In spring the toll book had no marks in it at all. The carters said the pass had grown kinder. On the first frost each year a pumpkin lantern still stands on the step of the hut, carved with a face that is not quite cruel, and nobody has ever seen who leaves it there.
