Twin jellyfish tattoos on a calf

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two mirrored jellyfish tattoos run up the back of a lower leg, each with a shaded bell and long, flowing tentacles. The bells are built from stippled dotwork shading, while the tentacles use bold solid black outlines with some fine inner detail. The ink is entirely black and grey on pale skin, and the image is framed straight on so both designs are fully visible.

Hal had been driving the Ostrander road for nine hours when the rain came sideways off the ridge and turned the salt pan to a sheet of water so still it held the sky. He pulled onto the verge because the wipers could not keep up, and because something was moving in the glare ahead.

Two bells rose from the flats, one the exact mirror of the other, trailing tentacles that dragged long black lines through the shallow water. They were not fish and not weed. They pulsed slow as breathing and drifted above the cracked white crust where, his grandmother had told him, the sea had stood before anyone thought to drive here. Hal wound the window down. The air smelled of brine and hot tar.

He thought of Ruth, who had painted seascapes on the back of the depot door and left for the coast the week the last well went dry. She had said the jellies were the only things the sea kept for itself, that they would wait out a drought in the mud and come back when the water did. He had called it nonsense. He watched the pair drift nearer, bell by bell, until their shadows lay across the road like two halves of a signature.

When the sun broke through, the water sank into the crust in a minute. The jellyfish were gone, leaving only the tanker's wet tyre tracks curling out across the white. Hal wound the window up, started the engine, and drove on with salt drying on his knuckles, the road ahead bright and empty as a page.
