Joker character portrait on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a comic-book style portrait of the Joker character, with wide staring eyes, a broad red-lipped grin showing yellow teeth, and green hair beneath a purple hat. The linework is bold and dark, with painterly blue and purple shading across the face and clothing. It fills the frame on a forearm, with a blurred striped fabric and tiled floor in the background.

Four in the morning and the ovens in Marrowby Lane have been warm since midnight, which is the only honest thing in the street. You have the piping bag in your fist and a bowl of violet buttercream going stiff at the edges, because Mrs Okonedo ordered forty cupcakes for her son's clown-themed christening and wants them "with a bit of bite". You told her you could do bite. You did not tell her you had never once piped a face.

Flour dust settles on the tray of green-tinted sponges like a fine, patient mould. You work the nozzle the way your nan taught you, steady wrist, no hurry. Two dots for eyes, wide and surprised, then a mouth stretched across the sponge in a red line that you keep too long, so it curls at the ends. Then yellow for the teeth. The first six look like eager relatives at a wedding. The seventh looks back at you.

Somewhere behind the bread racks the radio murmurs the shipping forecast, Dogger and Fisher, a long calm list of places that will never need you. You keep reaching for a plain rosette and your hand keeps drifting back to the grin. Each one you finish grins a little wider than the last, and you tell yourself it is the fluorescent tube humming overhead, making everything look like it is laughing at a joke nobody told you.

By six the trays are boxed and the van is idling outside. Mrs Okonedo lifts the lid, reads the cupcakes, and laughs so hard she has to hold the counter. She presses a fiver into your hand and says the boy will be terrified and delighted in equal measure. You nod, wipe your palms on your apron, and find a smear of violet on the inside of your wrist, shaped exactly like a smile. You decide not to wash it off just yet.
