Colour tattoo of a grinning Joker face with green snake-like hair and bloodshot eyes on the thigh, in a bold neo-traditional style.

Joker face with green hair on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large portrait of the Joker's face with a wide red grin, yellowed teeth and bloodied, bloodshot eyes, framed by green snake-like hair. The linework is bold and dark with cross-hatched shading on the skin and black fill behind the face. Green and red ink stand out against the greys and blacks, and the design fills the limb with a tight, centred composition.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, because the next bit is the bit your mothers skip. Behind the coconut shy there was a tent with no name painted on it, only a grin, and inside it lived a man who had been laughing since the Tuesday before the Great Frost.

He ran the cakewalk for Harrow and Vell's Travelling Marvels. Every night he told the same joke about the strongman's wife, and every night the crowd laughed back, because a laugh is catching the way a cold is. Nobody noticed the hair until the autumn, when his curls went green and began to coil like grass snakes in a gutter. Then they noticed the eyes, which had gone red at the rims from never once blinking at the sun.

A fortune teller from Boston had sold him that laugh years before, in a bottle with a cork. She told him a laugh should be paid for. He didn't believe her. So one night, when a boy tumbled off the big wheel and nobody screamed, only chuckled, he went down to the far field with a tin of lamp oil and a box of matches, meaning to burn the tent and the grin along with it.

But the snakes had got there first. In the morning the field was bare except for a dozen green-headed rushes swaying where the tent had stood, and every one of them was laughing, very quietly, if you put your ear close enough to the ground.
