The jack came to the table on the third Saturday of that summer. Nobody had booked him. He had green hair the colour of pond weed, a blue coat with a rose pinned to the lapel, and a bow tie that looked painted on, which it was, the landlady decided, because she could see the brush marks at the collar. He sat down without asking, shuffled with long white fingers, and dealt himself a hand so quickly that the maiden aunt from Croydon wept.

He lost every hand for an hour. That was how the old tale goes, and folk who tell it plainly never say why. On the stroke of eleven he laid down a single card, the jack of hearts, and it was not the jack of hearts. It was a small painted face of the landlady's late husband, grinning, and beneath him the words: paid in full.

The next morning the rose was on the windowsill, still wet. The landlady swept the cards into the grate and did not deal again for thirty years.
